Veterinary Traumatology
In our centre we perform advanced surgical techniques such as tibial plateau levelling techniques (TPLO and CCWO), CBLO (CORA Based Leveling Osteotomy) and TTA (Tibial Tuberosity Advancement) for the repair of cranial cruciate ligament rupture, as well as the extracapsular TightRope technique.
For hip dysplasia, ODP, OTP, pubic symphysiodesis and cemented or cementless hip prosthesis techniques are performed. For early diagnosis of hip dysplasia, distraction radiographs can be performed or in the case of the Labrador Retriever breed it is possible to perform a blood test for hip dysplasia (biomarkers).
For hip replacements, we have a team of specialist orthopaedic surgeons.
Arthroscopy allows the diagnosis and treatment of joint pathologies. It is a minimally invasive technique that does not require large incisions as in conventional surgery. In this way, the patient recovers more quickly with less postoperative pain.
Arthroscopy is commonly used for the treatment of joint injuries, such as osteochondritis diseccans, fragmentation of the medial coronoid process (elbow dysplasia).
For the resolution of fractures we have several systems, from the most common internal and external fixation systems, locking nails to the new systems of Locking plates from Synthes, FIXIN, SOP and ALPS.
For elbow dysplasia: arthroscopy, the Proximal Abducting Ulna Osteotomy (P.A.U.L.) and the Canine Unicompartmental Elbow arthroplasty (CUE) technique.
Medial Patellar Dislocation
For medial patellar dislocation, tibial tuberosity transposition and sulcoplasty is performed. For severe cases with bony deformities, corrective osteotomies are performed and for cases of patellofemoral arthrosis, Patella Groove Replacement (PGR) is performed.
Angular Bone Deformities and Oncological Surgery
For angular bone deformities and oncological surgery we have 3D printers to facilitate these surgeries.
AniCura Marina Baixa Veterinary Hospital has a regenerative medicine service, using growth factors and stem cells. The growth factors will allow a faster recovery from joint injuries such as osteochondritis, ligament and tendon injuries. They also accelerate the healing of bone fractures, as well as certain chronic skin ulcers. Stem cells are simply obtained from a small portion of the patient's own fat. This is sent to the laboratory and in 14-21 days is ready for use. It is currently being used in patients with severe osteoarthritis and osteochondral lesions, but in the future it may be used in patients with chronic skin ulcers.
Veterinary neurology and neurosurgery
Spinal surgery for the treatment of herniated discs, tumours, traumas, etc. As well as intracranial lesions (tumours).
Herniated disc surgery:
- Laminectomy
- Disc Fenestration
- Lateral corpectomy
- Ventral Slot (ventral groove)
- Minimally invasive disc fenestration
Surgery for atlantoaxial instability, caudal cervical instability (wobbler syndrome), lumbosacral stenosis (cauda equina), treatment of hydrocephalus by ventriculoperitoneal shunt.
The centre has a helical CT scan which facilitates the diagnosis of this type of pathology.
Computerised tomography facilitates orthopaedic and trauma surgery and neurosurgery.
